KAREN EBERLE-SMITH
LAYERED
My work with paper explores the balance between fragility and resilience, mirroring the delicate equilibrium found in nature. Paper-making is a transformative process, breaking down raw plant materials into pulp and shaping them into new forms, reflecting cycles of growth and renewal. While I honor traditional paper-making methods, I blend them with experimental techniques like dipping, molding, and layering, pushing the medium’s boundaries. I aim to create pieces that embody the serenity and strength of nature, using natural plant materials to connect my art to the earth. My practice is grounded in a commitment to sustainability and a deep curiosity about the origins of the plants I use, their ecological roles, and how they can be harvested responsibly. Through my work, I hope to offer a visual meditation on the interconnectedness of nature, inviting viewers to reflect on the quiet power and beauty that paper, as a medium, can convey.
